Methane Abatement - Reverse Trade Missions
Welcome to our Project Spotlight, where we feature the most impactful initiatives currently underway. Discover our transformative projects driving international trade, economic growth, and development. Dive into the details to learn how these efforts are shaping the future.
Bilateral Chamber is proud to serve as a trusted partner of the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA), organizing and leading vital trade missions. As part of this partnership, we were selected to spearhead the Advanced Technologies for Methane Abatement Reverse Trade Mission (RTM) Series. In this role, we design and implement technical and business agendas for a series of RTMs to the United States. In 2023, we already completed two successful RTMs in the MENA and LATAM regions involving seven countries.
Scope: our mandate spans 15 countries across five global regions including MENA, LATAM, Indo-Pacific, Central Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa
Participants: senior executives and decision-makers from Energy Ministries, NOCs, and private energy sector companies of the participating countries
Objectives: introduce the latest U.S. technologies, financial resources, services, and best practices for methane emission reduction in the oil and gas sectors, including flare gas utilization solutions, Waste-to-Energy (WTE) technologies, and BioGas and BioMethane solutions
Actionable outcomes:
Two successful RTMs completed in 2023:
MENA: Algeria, Egypt, and Libya
LATAM: Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, and Mexico
Three trade missionsplanned in 2024 and 2025:
Indo-Pacific: Indonesia, Malaysia, India or Pakistan, and Thailand
Central Asia: Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan
Sub-Saharan Africa: Nigeria
Methane emissions are the second-largest contributor to global warming, with a global warming potential 25 times higher than carbon dioxide (CO2). This underscores the urgent need to address methane pollution as the fastest way to slow down global warming.
The Global Methane Pledge (GMP), launched at COP26, underscores the critical need to reduce methane emissions from energy, agriculture, and waste sectors to achieve significant near-term gains in global climate efforts. With over 155 participating countries, this collective commitment aims to reduce global methane emissions by at least 30 percent from 2020 levels by 2030.
The United States assumes a central role in the GMP. With investments exceeding $20 billion in cutting-edge technologies and regulations to address methane emissions, the U.S. Department of Energy has allocated funding for the Research & Development of methane abatement monitoring, measuring, and mitigation technologies.
Our RTM Series supports U.S. efforts to expand membership in the Global Methane Pledge.
