This year’s ADIPEC in Abu Dhabi was nothing short of extraordinary. Held under the theme "Connecting Minds. Transforming Energy," it brought together over 205,000 participants from 172 countries, making it the largest energy gathering in the world. The record-breaking attendance, up by 20,000 from the previous year, underscored the UAE's pivotal role as a global energy, technology, and innovation hub, cementing ADIPEC’s status as the leading forum for the energy sector.
Key Trends at ADIPEC 2024: Energy Transformation and Innovation
Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Managing Director & Group CEO of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) delivered powerful remarks during the ADIPEC 2024 opening ceremony. Following his call to action, three key trends emerged: the ongoing transformation of the global energy system, the rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI), and the rise of the Global South and emerging markets. ADIPEC 2024 underscored the urgent need for collaboration across sectors and borders to meet global energy demands sustainably, highlighting the significant economic opportunities emerging from cross-sector partnerships, particularly at the intersection of energy and AI. With over 2,200 exhibitors and 30 country pavilions in 16 exhibition halls, ADIPEC is a major hub for forging new partnerships and strategies to drive sustainable socioeconomic growth.
The Energy Transition - A Blended Approach to Global Security
There was a strong consensus that the energy transition is well underway, however it remains a multifaceted challenge. While oil and gas will continue to play a central role in ensuring energy security, the focus is increasingly shifting to low-carbon technologies and renewables. Clean hydrogen and CCUS are emerging as game-changers, especially for hard-to-abate sectors like cement, steel, and chemicals.
Natural gas was reaffirmed as a bridge fuel, essential for reducing emissions while renewable capacity scales. This blend of energy sources—oil, gas, renewables, and hydrogen—is the key to achieving global energy goals in a sustainable, affordable way.
Geopolitical tensions additionally heightened the need for energy security. Regional cooperation emerged as a major theme, emphasizing the importance of cross-border energy infrastructure, such as electricity grids and gas pipelines, to enhance resilience and diversify energy supplies.

Digitalization was one of the central themes, with discussions highlighting the profound impact of emerging technologies on the energy sector, particularly artificial intelligence (AI). Energy companies are increasingly leveraging AI and data analytics to optimize operations across the energy value chain, from predictive maintenance and asset management to improving the efficiency of energy production and distribution. Discussions also revolved around the role of smart grids, which allow for better integration of renewable energy sources and enable more efficient energy consumption. Additionally, innovations in energy storage technologies, driven by digital solutions, are seen as crucial to addressing the intermittent nature of renewable energy and ensuring a stable energy supply.
On the other hand, as the demand for digital technologies and AI grows, so does the need for power to support the infrastructure behind these innovations. Big data centers, essential for processing and storing vast amounts of data, require significant energy to operate. As the energy sector continues to embrace digital transformation, it must also address the increasing energy consumption of these data centers. This creates a dual challenge: balancing the environmental benefits of digital innovation with the need for sustainable and reliable power sources to fuel the digital infrastructure.
The Rise of the Global South in Energy Development
Some key discussions at ADIPEC 2024 centered around energy access in emerging markets, particularly in Africa, where over 600 million people, or 43% of the global population, still lack access to electricity. Clean energy solutions, particularly solar, are critical to addressing this gap. Investment in Africa’s energy infrastructure is crucial for regional development and global sustainability. However, the challenge remains in scaling up these solutions to meet growing energy demands. Discussions at ADIPEC also highlighted the need for innovative financing models and cross-border collaborations to build the necessary infrastructure—whether through public-private partnerships or international investments—that can help bring reliable, affordable energy to underserved communities.
Egypt’s Commitment to a Balanced Energy Mix
As part of our continued commitment to ADIPEC, we hosted our key members and partners during our Annual Board Dinner at ADIPEC 2024, including HE Martina Strong, the US Ambassador to the UAE. The dinner featured a fireside chat between H.E. Eng. Karim Badawi, Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, and Clay Neff, Chevron’s President of International Exploration and Production. Minister Badwani emphasized Egypt’s unwavering commitment to a balanced energy mix that integrates renewable energy with traditional sources such as oil and natural gas to achieve its 2030 Vision.
With a target of achieving 20% renewable electricity by 2030, Egypt is positioning itself as a leader in the regional energy transition. Egypt’s vast natural gas reserves, particularly in the Eastern Mediterranean, remain central to Egypt’s energy strategy. While natural gas will continue to fuel economic growth while helping meet emissions reduction goals, Egypt is accelerating investments in renewables, hydrogen, and carbon capture technologies to ensure it meets its climate commitments and transitions to a low-carbon future.
