On Thursday, October 2nd, 2014, the Bilateral Chamber successfully leveraged an esteemed panel of experts from UTHealth Medical School, Houston Methodist Hospital, the City of Houston Department of Health and Human Services, and the Houston Airport System to provide their insights and expertise on the recent Ebola crisis and other global epidemics.

As news broke of the recent Ebola case in Dallas, Texas, concerns about the viral outbreak in West Africa and other ongoing epidemics like MERS in the Middle East, and Swine Flu in Asia, members from the international business community came together to listen to the panelists discuss strategies to contain the disease on macro and micro levels.

Panelists offered their perspectives on the crisis and gave insights on how to manage and outbreak. Dr. Luis Ostrosky, MD, FACP, FIDSA, FSHEA, Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology: UTHealth Medical School & Medical Director of Epidemiology: Memorial Hermann Texas Medical Center predicted more cases in Dallas from primary transmission from the infected patient. He said that the time for contingency planning in the business community is now.

Dr. Jeffery Kalina, MD, Associate Medical Director of the Emergency Room, Medical Director of Observant United and Case Management & Member of the Houston Methodist Executive Committee: Houston Methodist Hospital, said that the government is using every resource possible. He said he was confident that the situation would quickly be contained.

Dr. Raouf Arafat, Director of Surveillance and Public Health Preparedness: the City of Houston Department of Health and Human Services, said that the city is prepared and that he was more concerned threats with from pandemic flu and MERS than with Ebola.

Mr. Byron Oujesky, Emergency Management Coordinator: Houston Airport System, said that the airport already takes extra steps including contacting the CDC and using heightened disinfection steps when cleaning a flight on which a symptomatic person is has traveled.
